Now We Are 11....

Now we are 11...
Your numbers are like twins..
standing tall and confident side by side..
Just like you..
My beautiful Gemini...
Your shoulders are widening..
Your legs are lengthening..
You are only a mere 3.5 inches shorter than I..
I can't nuzzle your head under my chin...
and soon..
very very soon...
we will be looking into each other's eyes..

Oh those eyes...
still full of wonder, curiosity, joy and most importantly..
LOVE.
But..
Things are changing..
changing so incredibly fast..
You see things clearer through these new eyes..
You are peeking through the curtain.
You're learning how the world REALLY works..
I watch as it takes a bit of a toll on your soul my sweet anxious one..
But
I am still there...
holding your hand and
we shall brave it together..

So I guess...
This is why 11
is absolute heaven...

Happy Happy Birthday my sweet man-child Monster..

So let's dive into some of that double layered chocolate cake.

12

From the time I was born until the time I turned 7...
I had a Blankie...
She was the first of it's kind..
1960's wash and wear acrylic..
Freeing all those Mothers of countless hours as they were able to just plop it into the washing machine at any given moment...

She was absolutely gorgeous..
A soft baby blue in hue in an open basketweave that felt like cashmere upon your cheek and with the smoothest of silk satin 1 1/2" binding..
Wherever I went..
Blankie went..
I wasn't a pacifier baby..
that was my brother's gig....
I was a Blankie baby..
I would spend countless hours gliding my fingers over the cool slippery silky satin..
and at much to my Mother's chagrin..
I would move from the satin and rub my thumb knuckle over the course acrylic thread binding and then back again to the silky satin..
Over the course of those early years, she offered friendship, tranquility and security for my ever changing childhood.
Towards the end, Blankie's cashmere basketweave had become coarsely matted and quite sadly, just a mere foot in length...
What remained in tack..
was my beloved satin binding..
Still silky and still rough all at the same time.
At 7, she was left under a pillow in a San Francisco hotel and even to this day (in my forties), I lament her loss.

So as I sit here today under a beautiful blue sky, I am lovingly reminded about the number 12 and what it all means..

After 12 years..
Most warranties have expired...
Our bodies are challenging us daily..
Our minds...
well let's just say they are starting to show signs of fog..
If there are children,
they have now hit the age to be left on their own..
Individually, we have been granted more independence..
But
our dance..
our dance has become like a Fred Astaire choreographed number
and
our lives have become, as they say, smooth as silk..
But
There is still a roughness to it...
In 12 years, there is always an inevitable loss of a loved one
or perhaps
beloved friends move away...
But
like the soft yet strong open basketweave..
We have been giving each other more space to grow
Yet
we are bound stronger and tighter than ever from a thread that is surprisingly soft like cashmere but as impervious as acrylic.

So today on our 12th wedding anniversary..
I thank my beloved husband and 3 sons(minus 1)
for allowing me to be who I am..
for not allowing life's roughness to break our strings..
for giving me friendship, tranquility and security..
for the laughter and our own perfectly choreographed dance moves..
and
for the love and compassion of a family..

As 12 marks the gift of silk..
may our lives be ever so smooth...

Now We Are 10.....

Now we are 10...
You have hit double digits.. You are a decade...
Your bones are stretching and lengthening at an enormous rate..
You take up the entire couch but still find room to snuggle me in...
You had two of the most wonderful teachers this year who have stood up for you, had your back and cheered you all the way.
It is not Elementary my dear...you have graduated to the Middle...
MY foot fits into YOUR shoe...
You still have the MOST beautiful pitch in baseball but it is your swing that is a marvel to watch.

At too young of an age,
you have been learning one of life's hardest lessons..
Loss..
Your best friend and brother
and
your second family who just so happens to be moving clear across the country by the end of this month.
BUT
You are handling it with grace, dignity, courage
and understanding that this is what life is about..
that they will forever be with you and have made YOU the beautiful person that you now are...
You. inspire. me.

You still hold my hand,  wave to me from the bus (when no one else is looking), kiss me every morning and night and a few in between..

So I guess..
This is why 10
is certainly an age that I will want to do over and over again..

Happy Happy Birthday my sweet growing Monster..
You with the deep dark soulful eyes...
your ever growing mop top..
your mischievous smile...
YOU have made ME a better person..
You are my sun, moon and stars wrapped up into one package..
I love you little Monster..

Now let's get those sleeping bags unrolled..
we have a camping party on a magical island to attend to..
a night under the stars with your closest of pals...
and perhaps there will be a few gooey s'mores with your name on it..

Cookies and Milk...

Today I was supposed to do a fabulous little post about the
Velvet Mill Holiday Show...
However..
After finishing the Glitter House, sending it out to the Lovely Lena and then some last minute Christmas shopping..
I had to put these tired old dogs up and
rest my poor tired brain a bit....

When the Monster came home from school...
He poured us two glasses of cold milk
(mixed with a little chocolate syrup..because why not?!)
Popped some Nestle Toll House cookies into the oven..
Brought me to the couch...
Grabbed a blanket..
Plated the freshly baked cookies..
Turned on the T.V. ...
and said..
"This is the BEST day EVER Mama.."
Soo..
that fabulous little post will have to wait...
because I am his..
and
 He is mine...
Life is short..
So enjoy the time...

Catch of the Day...

Last Friday night on the Connecticut Shoreline...
the sea was a swelling and a storm was a brewing...
2 brave fisherman, the Tall One and his Dad, "Grand",
decided to brave it and head out by boat in their quest to
catch the winning fish for the Annual Wesson Family Fishing Tournament.

At 10:30 at night, the Tall One was a bit hesitant..
BUT
Adventure Seeker "Grand" pushed onward and yelled "bring the boy!"
The Monster being a mere 2 steps away from being dressed in his cozy pj's, grabbed his rod and the trio set off for the dock.

In the darkest of nights and not a star in the sky,
3 generations of Wesson men waited patiently for the first bite...
They waited...and waited... and waited...

FINALLY..
there was a bite...
a rather BIG bite..
The Monster carefully with all his might...
reeled her in..

Flashlights and a tape measure came whirling out...
Could it be a keeper?

Absolutely!!!
37 inches my friends!!
Triumph!!

But as my Great Aunt always said,
"one cannot keep a fish unless you know how to clean it"

So that's exactly what he did...

A day and a night went by and no other fisherman had caught a mightier fish...

So with the help of a magic chef, Cousin Dave, they honored the fish in a glorious feast...
at the Big Table..
with stories about the one that got away...
and how The Monster battled, caught and won
The Annual Wesson Family Fishing Tournament!

Needless to say..I am one proud Mama..
Yes..he won..
yes..he is the first kid to be on the trophy
BUT
it's really about the other lessons learned..

1. You never know until you try.
2. You are never too old or too young to take risks.
3. Family is important.
4. Grandparents can be much more fun than parents.
5. One cannot achieve great success without the help of others.
6. All our dreams can come true,
if we have the courage to pursue them.
-Walt Disney
So I say HOORAY to my 3 generations of Wesson men, who each won an award...
BUT
who also won a moment and a memory that will forever change and better their wonderful lives...

Westward Ho...

A few weeks ago, the Smith & Wesson clans went on the adventure of a lifetime..
We touched down on a mere 7 states in only 9 days!!
We saw AMAZING, LIFE CHANGING, and PURELY MAGICAL things...
Watching a ginormous herd of Buffalo cross the wide open plains of Yellowstone, through a river and walk right in front of us HAD to be the highlight of the trip!!
A HUGE thanks to my parents for gifting our family this glorious adventure!!

But there was definitely one highlight on this trip that truly only a mother's heart could understand.

It happened on the first leg at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. We had just entered our first gift shop (there were about 5,000 after that) and the Monster was determined to find some sort of souvenir...
It was a hot mess of rocks, snow globes, books....blah blah blah..
I am sure that you have encountered it all before.
The Tall One and the Monster were at a stand still..
arguing and fighting over items made in Japan.
I realized it was a perfect time to escape..
and I did..
(by the way, the Tall One does this to me ALL the time..
so I only thought it fair)
Back on the bus(that's a whole other story), safe and sound I tried to find a few bars on my phone to check into civilization..
No dice..
Finally..Last but not least, my two boys arrived on the bus and slowly made their way back to me.
Casually and quite blase...
The Monster dropped something in my lap..
no words...
just the subtle drop..
which wasn't so subtle as everyone and their mother turned around.
I looked in my lap
and there she was...
black cord, purple, white, silver and sparkly.
There were some ooohs and ahhhs as everyone realized that
the ONLY thing he purchased in the shop was for me.
The Tall One winked and whispered..
"I told him it wasn't your style"
So I did what every good Mother does..I put it on and wore it for the entire trip...my heart singing silently inside..

Soo..what does a girl do after she has spent time in the wilderness without internet..
She immediately logs onto Anthropologie and goes virtual shopping..
What surprised me was that this trip had REALLY gotten into my soul
and as I uploaded my images from the trip..
they began to tell a story...
Lavender Oxide Pendant and Yellowstone
Vespero Necklace and Yellowstone
Crowned Stag Earrings and Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Seven Stones Necklace and Yellowstone
Balance Necklace and Wyoming
Sarsen Necklace and Views of South Dakota,Montana and Wyoming
Polygon Necklace and The Nature Gates at The Crazy Horse Memorial
Fanned Alloy Necklace and Yellowstone

Electolier Necklace and Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Metropolis Bib Necklace and Waterfalls In Wyoming..
Melodist Hoops and Dreamcatchers

Last but not least...my coveted necklace from the Monster...
How did he know that The Tetons which we saw on our last days of the trip would have so much in common with my precious jewel?

They say that Steel marks the 11 year anniversary.
Luckily for us, Tall One, that we just so happen to be in a steel tube flying over some of the most gorgeous landscape our country has to offer. Even though all of our boys aren't with us now, I know that very soon we shall be a family of five again.
To think...
We started out as two
then three
then four
and now finally five.
How wonderfully lucky we are..
to be wrapped around their fingers

Daddy-O....

Card found via Blackbird Letterpress

Happy Father's Day!!!

There are so many different types of Fathers out there...
There are the adventurers, protectors, providers, supporters, coaches, stay at homers, comedians and definitely
Supermen..

The Tall one is on his way home from a shark fishing expedition so I guess he must be put into the adventurer category..
He is ALWAYS bringing the Monster on fishing, biking, and hiking adventures..
They are my very own Lewis & Clark.

My Father is in the supporter category. He is my consummate cheerleader, always there to cheer me on..reading my blog EVERY day, following my adventures and always there to tell me how proud he is of me..
 each and EVERY day!!

The best part is..even though each Father may fall into one category...if you are lucky enough...
You just might realize that Grandfathers & Fathers TOGETHER make for one great Dad!

So this one's for you..all you Fathers & Grandfathers,

THANK YOU
Thank you for supporting us, protecting us, loving us and for including us in your wonderful and crazy adventures!!

Now We Are 9.....

Now we are 9...
The tooth fairy finally came and you hit the jackpot with 8 teeth. You can read, write, add, subtract and multiply. You can rest your head comfortably standing just under my chin. You had the BEST teacher EVER who gave you confidence, showed you laughter and instilled a passion for learning. Your jeans are the same length as mine. You can breakdance with the best of them, you have the most gorgeous pitch (in baseball) I have EVER seen and you are truly one AMAZING artist!

But you still hold my hand(except sometimes in certain places), pick flowers for me, run/skip during ANY organized sport, laugh with me for hours and tell me that you love me everyday!

So I guess...
That is why 9 is so wonderfully fine...
because you are still mine..

Happy Birthday my sweet Monster...
the one with the sensitive empathetic heart,  the mischievous smile, the wonderfully crazy haired mop top and those sparkly eyes which simply light up a room..

I love you like no other...

Now let's get some rockin kicks and get this Sneakerpalooza started!!!
(with chocolate cake of course)

Happy Weekend!!!

Image by Kina Wicks, found via Ruffled

Happy Weekend Everyone!!

I certainly am one lucky lady! This morning, I got to head down to The White Dress By The Shore for my lovely farm bride, Miss Eleanor, as it was her 2nd to last dress fitting....
Me Oh My.. did she ever look simply gorgeous!!
Very reminiscent of a young Grace Kelly...

But I couldn't head down before I had to zip over to the post office to mail off some VERY important invitations from my MOST important client!
Now..all my clients are equally as important.. but this one...
this one has been with me since the beginning...
It's not every day that you're having your last single digit birthday!

So the Monster will be turning 9 next week and I am glad that I am not the only insane artist up till 2 in the morning getting these beauties done...
The equally insane Miss Amy Graver of Elements Design was doing the exact same thing for her son's birthday...
His will be a "Spy" party and I know there will be no detail left untouched!

This year we are going with....
(drum roll please..)
Sneakerpalooza

So what exactly is Sneakerpalooza?
I have NO idea...but it sounded really cool and I am hoping that the Tall-One will take the reins on this one.

My vision?
Sneakers + Running = VERY tired little Monsters!

But..I will give you a little sneaky peek....
